Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
