Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
