The UK and US have agreed to a key trade agreement that will keep zero levies on British medicine shipments entering the US market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to increase funding on medicines through the NHS. This pledge secures that duties on these key products will stay at nothing for a period of 36 months.

This development is in response to previous statements to dramatically increase tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with potential rates discussed as high as one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the Britain bolsters the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and introduces much-needed fairness to transatlantic medicine commerce," a statement noted.

Economic Importance

Medicines represent one of the UK's most significant export categories to the America, which is clearly the biggest buyer for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures indicate that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK sold medicines totaling billions to the US. This value represented nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that span.

"This agreement protects jobs, boosts investment and sets the stage for the UK to become a worldwide center for medical research," a government official stated.

Key UK Commitments

The pact includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to double total public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. Previously, refunds were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a ongoing row between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by arguments that US consumers were charged a premium for the identical medicines than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS needed to spend more on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
